THE OAKLAND A'S, SHERYL CROW,SWEET BABY JAMES,CHICAGO AND CHICAGO.
So we did this private show in the windy city last night . On the way to the San Francisco airport. I am listening to the Oakland A's playoff baseball game on the electrical radio and the bases are loaded and the A's are up by 2 runs! And I mean nobody gave them a chance to win this game . Barry Zito is pitching and as you may remember he was on our TV show . So we hung out a little bit . Anywho so what do I do I call my buddy Jimmy Pugh who is the biggest A's fan and also is on tour with Robert Cray. They are doing a world tour with Eric Clapton and Doyle Bramhall is playing with Eric which is cool because I used to play with Doyle when he was like 19 and he lived in Santa Rosa . We played with the fabled Stu blank . We also had Kevin Russell on guitar in the same band and he used to play with Ted Nugent . That was a lot of guitar picks aflyin' ! Anywho. Jimmy is ,of course, watching the game in his hotel room in Boston .And Lo and behold they won the first game of the series......
So I got in real late to Chicago O'Hare airport and wasnt able to go hang out with our friends Rich and Linda . Isaak was with them though because he came in from doing the Jerry Lee Lewis special in New York . He must be wiped out because I got to spend a week at home and he went and hung out with that crazy Jerry Lee. Man that must have been awesome because we owe so much to Jerry Lee lewis . Isaak told jerry Lee that we still close our show with "Bonny Bee" one of his songs .....he said that really perked Jerry lee up .
The next day was show day ..so Sheryl our manager asks me if I want to go down and watch them rehearse the "feel good we are the world type" finale of the show we are doing later that night . And I say I wouldnt miss it for the world ....So here it is James Taylor , Sheryl Crow,Isaak and Sheryl's band and the horn players from Chicago . And they are singing "How sweet it is to be loved by you "
I know a marvin gaye song but it is now a james taylor song . So they are starting and stopping and trying to figure out an arrangement and James keeps tacking on one ending after another and I am thinking "oh boy" this is going to be a train wreck but it turns out great because Sheryl Crow's band is very good .
Turns out I had met Sheryl's guitar player Pete when he used to play for Pete Droge . I wonder what Droge is up to he is a very talented song writer..Oh yeah and I bump into Pete the night before at the Johnny Rockets hamburger shop on Rush street the night before . I was in there with gillian our wardrobe person who is a strict Vegetarian . Johnny's was all that was open nearby so she had a boca burger . So we were shooting the sh#t with Pete and the waiter said did we know who was just in here sitting where we are now and we allowed that we didnt and he said Steven Tyler from Arrowsmith. And Gillian started going on and on how when she was with another band on tour they did some shows with Arrowsmith and when they found out she was a vegetarian they had her eat with them at these fabulous catered meals so I go well if he is such a damned Vege what is he doing eating at Johnny Rocket's and the waiter goes and get Tyler's check and he shows it to us and says look he had a double patty burger " That is 11 pounds of beef" and I said I dont know anyone who could eat a double at Johnny's and Gillian starts to swoon " Oh Steven you have gone over to the dark side" See Steven is entertaining without even being there.
So back to the show First the band Chicago plays and mind you , we are in Chicago . then on a rotating stage we go on for like 4 songs , then James Taylor , then Sheryl Crow, then the big feel good finale . However in the middle of Sheryl Crow's set of 4 songs the power in the gernerator goes out . Mind you , we are playing out in a tent by Buckingham fountain , You know the one in "Married with children" so Sheryl and the band have to just walk off and boy does the momentum die off ......so there is like 10 minutes of quite time and Lee and Jimmy, the horn players from Chicago, are standing in the wings like the rest of us waiting for the finale . And they start yelling ,sarcastically, "We are losing them we are losing them " And , of course , we think this is hilarious.....Any way Isaak plugs the cord back in .....nah I am just kidding . and Sheryl finishes her 4 songs and the finale goes off without a hitch and we all go back to the hotel and everyone lives happily ever after
I SURE DO LOVE THIS TOWN
