THE MELBOURNE CUP,GEISHAS,WALNUT SOUP,AND DIANNA ROSS.
THE MELBOURNE CUP........
The Aussies tell me this is much more than a horse race. It is a week long party here in Melbourne. The papers are full of stories about what people will be wearing and who will be there , such and so on....I am looking forward to the festivities . They start tonight when we play this party that is for the cup . I know the time we played the Kentucky Derby it was wild . The horse that won that year was FUSAICHI PEGASUS. Which was owned by this Japanese guy who didnt speak any English and when he showed up, anywhere he actually had 5 Geisha girls following him around in full Geisha drag. Man......you should have seen the jaws dropping of the southern horsey set . It was pretty damned funny. Also at that Derby I had a great experience. We were at this big party and there were a bunch of celebs around . ROD STEIGER was there for christ sakes! And setting at my table was Emmy Lou Harris and I had met her before but didnt know her well. Now they had a band at this party and they had learned a couple of songs of all the music celebs that were there in the hopes they might sing. Anywho ,Emmy Lou turns to me and says "Kenney ,would you play drums on my song, "Blue Kentucky Girl" when I sing it ?"
After I had picked my self off of the floor I said " You want me to play drums on Blue Kentucky Girl with you ,IN KENTUCKY!!!!" HOLY SH#T... I would be honored . So I did and I had a smile on my face all the rest of the night .
Had a great day today and yesterday in Melbourne It has been around 75 degrees in the mid day . So I went over to Chapel street to this way cool antiques mall and these guys had this case FULL of old unused vintage sunglasses . Ray bans and the like. I all ready have some vintage Ray-Bans I got up in Canada . But I bought these awesome tortoise shell aviator shaped Austrian made sixties shades . How's that for adjectives.......Later that night I went to this Chinese place and they had Walnut soup . Yeah I know I am thinking the same thing your thinking. I gots to have a go . Oh Man ,,,,,big mistake . Let me just say in the interest of cultural relations ....It doesnt taste as bad as poi ..lets leave it at that ! I love it over on Chapel street You should go there if you ever get to Melbourne. We used to hang out there all the time because we always stayed at the Como hotel,there on chapel.The hotel is connected to some TV studios which is very convienent. We were on some TV show there a few years back with this Aussie band REGURGITATOR, I know , fabulous name . They are massive over here in OZ . And We were talking about the Metallica movie and I was urging them to see it because it is facinating ,really . One of the best movies for behind the scenes type stuff and you really see the talent of James Hetfield.....I bumped into him in San Rafael back when we were doing the TV show and he and his kids were eating popcorn outside of this grocery store on the edge of town and he says to me " So Kenney ...big movie star now" In that booming voice ..And I go " No James ...Premium cable"
They have here in Melbourne Capt. James Cook's house ! Apparently somebody bought it in England in the 30s and packed it in boxes and moved it here . So of course I had to go see it , today. What is it with the British . They let some Knuckleheads buy the London Bridge and move it to Arizona...what is next . "Say..cousin ,how much you take for that big clock up in that there tower...really ...done"
One of the first times we payed here Dick Dale "king of the surf guitar " was in town and he sat in with us ..that was great . It was over at the old Palais by the roller coaster in St. kilda.....the next day we did a TV show here in Melbourne and get this ,,,,,,On the panel was Chris Isaak , Dick Dale , Ray Manzerek from the Doors, and Roger Daltry ...ON THE SAME PANEL ..Now that was a bizarre group. As you remember the Doors didnt have a bass player. Ray played the bass parts on a Fender keyboard bass....I asked him if he still had one , and he said he didnt . What is wrong with him ....
Oh yeah and Dianna Ross is playing at the party,tonight , too....
