HAWAII,MARK TWAIN,CAPT. COOK,TONY LA RUSSA,AND AUKLAND NOT OAKLAND
Since we last talked we did two shows in hawaii. I went over a week earlier to do that Maui hang thing. It was a blast to hang out on Makena beach and walk around on the volcanic tide pools on Kam 1 beach. One good tip about Maui is that not all the beaches are listed . So when you see a sign that says dead end ,there will probably be a nice beach at the end of the road. The day I showed up it rained like a mother........So the water was too churned up to snorkel ,though I did anyway . The weather "fined up" as they say in Oz, so I went snorkeling on Makena and did swim with two Sea Turtles the size of coffee tables.
On the flight over from the mainland I finished my latest book on Sir Francis Drake. I bought it on a ferry ride from Victoria to Seattle on our summer tour like 2 months ago but just got around to reading it. He is so fascinating. I brought the book by Mark Twain ,"Roughing it in the Sandwich Islands" . Which is his accounting of his trip to Hawaii in the 1860's. It has Twain's description of the Hawaiian treat ,Poi, which is a Taro root paste. It tastes something akin to dirt......it is hilarious . But I am in the land of Captain Cook . He discovered Hawaii back in the 1700s . And yes he did get hacked up there off of Kona. But if you get to the big island you must go snorkeling off of Honounou , or it is also called "two steps" by the city of refuge. it is also by the Capt. Cook monument . It is an astounding place to snorkel. You start off for about 20 yards and you about 3 feet deep then .....AAAAAAHHHHHHH....It drops off to this HUGE canyon .Like about 70 feet deep and it feels like you are flying . Very cool.
We played a show in Maui and one in Honolulu . They were both a blast . You know, I love Waikiki. There I said it. Yes it is crowded, yes it is touristy, but it has this "retro cool thing " that is a lot of fun. A swinging town. And the bougainvillia ! It grows like a weed in Hawaii . In Northern Cali we have to baby those plants . I mean I have several in my back yard , but in Hawaii they are everywhere . They have an Orange one that I havent see on the mainland . Very nice.......One last Hawaii tip . if you go get a CD by the late Hawaiian singer Dennis Pavao. He is one of the best singers I have ever heard. It is fun to listen to while you drive around Hawaii....Mahalo.
I am in Aukland New Zealand today and I just went walking all over downtown Auckland . We have a show here tonight. I was reading the Auckland Picyune or what ever the newspaper is called here and I saw that the WORLD SERIES was on ...RIGHT NOW..So I hightailed it to the hotel and I have the third game of the series on now ....All right score!.....Our good buddy Tony LaRussa is back in the world series with his St. Louis Cardinals. So natch I am rooting for him . His team just went up 2 to nothing but it is early. I know I have told you about La Russa but it bears repeating he is so cool....We know him from doing his animal rescue benefit ,which happens every year. We have done about 3 of those....Ontime we were playing at the Warfield in San Francisco. And we were doing soundcheck in the afternoon and I am on the drums and we are playing Wicked Game and I look over and ...oh my god ...that is Tony LaRussa standing in the wings. I didnt know him that well back then and he sees me looking at him and he starts to give m the steal sign on his arm like he is telling me to steal second base and I burst out laughing and Isaak looks around and gives me a dirty look like I am goofing off . Another time Isaak and I go and see the St. Louis Cardinals play in St. Louis. So Tony takes us to his office and he introduces us to some players . One being Chris Carpenter who is pitching this game I am watching. So it is like 2 minutes till the game starts and I say hey Tony dont you have something you should be doing ? And he says nah once I have made out my players card that is it ....He then gets a young page to takes us up to the general managers box .....And he gets lost and finally puts us in a sky box with no one in it ...I had been to the general mangers box before and this wasnt it but I thought ....whatever. the usher must know what he is doing . We were hungry so we get on the horn and we get like a bunch of hot dogs , nachos and there were drinks on ice in the box all ready . So we were set ....We watch the whole game it was a blast and an excellent game ...We then, after the game go back to the hotel....About 2 hours later my phone rings in my hotel room. It is Tony La Russa and he starts to chew me out. .....he says ...I called up to the general manager Walt Jocketty's suite and I asked them when you and Isaak left the game ...5th inning ?....7th inning....and they said that you didnt even show up ...so you just walked out and stood me up !!!!! on and on and on...and I am thinking WOW i am getting yelled at by Tony La Russa one of the best managers in baseball!!!!
I then told him that the usher put us in some box I dont know whos but I told him that there will be charges because Isaak and I had a blast in that box ....He said ...Ohhh that must be the Jocketty family suite.....I said well we had it all to our self....
OK I have to get back to the World Series ...talk to you from Australia next .
