JAMES BURTON,Catahoula Pig baying ,and Amsterdam memories

WHEW......Hey folks .....Sorry it has been so long since I blogged . I have been given s**t from California to Europe for not keeping up on it so I am back with a vengence....Part of the deal was that I was home off of the road and I didnt think you guys would be all that interested in ....I got up ....made coffee ...read the paper....walked the dog ...picked up poop....talked to the neighbors .....you know my everyday stuff. But along those lines I lost 2 bougainvillia plants to the frost in December and My pygmy date palm is pretty burnt. But I planted a queen palm in the front,a king palm in the back and a guadeloupe palm where the dead bougainvillia were. So there you are up to date .
Right before Isaak and I came to Europe we went to beautiful Shrevesport La. to do the James Burton guitar festival . For you folks that dont know James used to play guitar with Elvis , Rickey Nelson,Merle haggard and everyone else. He has a festival in the Shrevesport Municipal auditorium . The very same place where the Louisianna Hayride was held . It was like the grand ole opry but held in Shrevesport and everyone form Hank Williams to Hank Snow played there and it has not changed one bit . I was in heaven. But getting there was quite a tale. Sheryl ,our manager, Isaak and myself flew to Dallas/ Ft. Worth airport but it was storming so bad that our flight to Shrevesport was canceled . So now what .....Sheryl our ever intrepid manager said it is only a four hour drive to Shrevesport and I rented a car . I said Sheryl look out the window it is pouring rain and there have been tornedos everywhere. She says nah it will be fine I will drive . So she gets behind the wheel and I have the map sitting shotgun and Isaak crawls in the back to go to sleep . We drove from one end of Dallas to the other headed east and it was raining so hard you could barely see the road. Sheryl was white knuckling it . But she was driving like a champ! It continued like that for another 2 hours . I then tell Sheryl to pull over and I will drive the rest of the way . I know what you are thinking and believe me you dont want Isaak to drive. We suddenly realise that we have not eaten in a real long time and we pull over to look for something but it is midnight in East Texas . We end up going to a Mc Donalds . Because the Dairy Queen was closed. Every self respecting town in Texas has a Dairy Queen . My town Borger had two! It was then I turned to those two and said "Man.....what succession of misfortunate events have led me to be in the car with you two in the driving rain at a McDonald's drive-thru , at midnight, in Mineola Texas." Needless to say we made it and what a time we had.
I met some new friends there at the show. Monte Montgomery who is an amazing guitar player . And a knuckle head .We hung out quite a bit . Check him out. Also I met lee Roy Parnell . Now I had heard of him and I told him all the bus drivers on tour play him. but I had never met him. I had seen him numerous times on one of my favorite TV shows called "Wide open country " on CMT you guys should check that show out . I DVR it because it is on at wierd times .But it has turned me on to so many new and talented acts . See there really are talented people out there it is just hard to find them . On that show I descovered acts like John Cowen "Carla has a cool tatoo",Old Crow medicine show, the derailers and Lee Roy himself. Well on leroy's videos he sings these heartfelt songs with a very earnest face . So I am thinking .ooooohhh Lee Roy is all serious and s**t. But no he is hilarious . We were laughing and cracking up the whole time .As well as being a fellow Texan...He and Dickie Betts did "In memory of Elizabeth Reed"!!!!!
Chris and I did "Believe what you say " A Ricky nelson tune with james Burton ,and Isaak and I were smiling from ear to ear . James is still great . We had lunch that afternoon and James was full of great stories .He told of how he got the gig with Ricky Nelson at age 16 and went from living in Shrevesport to Hollywood. He lived with ozzie and harriett and she made him breakfast every morning, he said . How about that !!!!!
I love Louisianna it is so interesting. While I was there they were having pig baying contests . They said "It isnt a sport it is a heritage"!!!!!
Matter of fact they have a breed specific dog to corral the pigs , called a "Catahoula" The louisianna state pooch apparently.
They used to have pig baiting where the pig was bitten but they had to stop because it was p***ing of the pig .
So we have started the tour . We started in Holland . And man Amsterdam is so beautiful . We played at the paradiso ,an old church, that was the first place we ever played in Europe in 1985 .........The crowd was off the hook . That was one special night . I have so many memories of Amsterdam. i went back to the drum shop where I bought 2 drums back i like '91 . The guy actually remembered me .
OK gang I will try and keep more posts coming during this europe trip . So people will stop yelling at me ......
YOUR VERY GOOD PAL
