SAN RAFAEL,SEATTLE, JIMI HENDRIX'S WHITE STRAT,AND RON THOMPSON !
I just spent 5 glorious days at home . I dont want to bore you with that but I will anyway . I mainly just hung out in the back yard and enjoyed the weather . One night around 7 pm San Rafael hill caught on fire and me and all my neighbors were standing in the street watching the helicopters throwing water on the fire . Very exciting . Then the next day I went to get a haircut at Fairfax barber shop. No SA...LON for me .I wouldnt normally mention that fact ,but I find it ironic that the best barber in Marin is in Fairfax . Which if you dont know....is a little hippie town just west of me . So it looks like no one in the whole town knows that there actually IS a barber nearby . And it is fun to talk to Mike the barber who used to drive a bus . So we swap road stories. Also I am going to miss the Marin County fair this year . It is hot and dusty at the fair but it is always a good time . A couple of years ago I went and I saw Night Ranger play . Man they were SMOKIN'.......they are a much maligned band , for no good reason . I was watching that vh1 show were they put old bands back together or as I like to call the show "scared straight". Anywho....... they were putting the Motels back together and two of the guys were mad because the one said the other should be in Night Ranger . Like it was a slag . And I am all, you guys could'nt carry Night Ranger's mullet comb!!! Enough about that ......
So we are back in Seattle were we have played just about a million times . But it is one of America's great cities.
If you ever get here make SURE you go to the Music Experience Project . Or more commonly known the Jimi Hendrix museum. Numero uno , it was built by the great architect Frank Geary so it is an amazing building but man o' man what is inside .I dont know where to start .I have been several times. The first time I went, I walk in and they hand you a computer ,Paul Allen of Microsoft fiananced this thing, and there is a tv screen 2 stories tall with Howlin' Wolf singing his heart out . Oh I am going to like this place .I went with Bill our old Guitar tech and when he saw Jimi Hendrix's white Strat he was moved to tears. He goes " There it is man ....there it is Jimi's guitar !!!!" And there it was indeed . They had a whole section on Jimi and it was funny, you point your machine at whatever you want to hear about and it tells you about said object. It said that they flipped a coin to see who would be the drummer with Jimi Hendrix between Mitch Mitchell, who got the job, and Aynsley Dunbar . Now that story sounded too good to be true and I just happen to know Aynsley because he comes and see us sometimes down in Santa Barbara. So I call him and say hey Aynsley do you know what they are saying about you at the MEP museum? And he said that he did and the story wasnt true . It was over money ......it is ever thus...He said jimi was paying 5 pounds less than everyone else in London but that Jimi used to sit in with his band ,THE AYNSLEY DUNBAR RETALIATION, all the time !!!!!!
My favorite part of the museum is the garage band part . Most of the bands you never heard of but man were they cool .The New Orleans and Janis joplin part are cool too. I relate to Janis because we both came from a little oil patch town in Texas, moved to Austin for awhile ,then moved to San Francisco , then moved to Marin county. She used to live in Larkspur which is a couple of towns over from me .....Funny that . Have you ever seen that footage of Janis Joplin on the Dick Cavett show in the 60s. Man.......She is on fire !!!!!!
And not for nothing.....I was listening to KPIG radio , in my backyard , and I head a version of "I can see for Miles" by the Who done bluegrass style..... by the great Old Crow Medicine show and Marty Stewart . I was floored check it out....
Oh and before I forget ...whatever you do , dont be late for our upcoming shows because Isaak and I's old buddy Ron Thompson is opening the shows and he is an absolute wizard on guitar. He is in fact one of the first people I met when I moved to San Rancisco from Texas. We were in our early twenties but Ron had already played with John Lee Hooker for 10 years , for christ sake . And I had heard of him in Texas . So I was in awe of the guy . Sh#t I grew a "Soul patch" just because Ron had one and he was so damn cool. In fact, when Stevie Ray Vaughn came to play the San Francisco Blues Festival , he wasnt famous yet , he asked me "Ron Thompson right ?" And I said what do you mean Stevie ? And he said Ron Thompson is the guy to blow away out here right ?" And I said "Yeah Stevie I guess he is "
I am going to go down and mingle with the tourists at Pike Fish market .....Adios...
