THE GOLD COUNTRY, MORMON TABERNACLE, AND THE LAST PICTURE SHOW...

Hey gang ...I have a couple of hours till we rush off to Boulder so I thought I would give you an update.
We played a wonderful venue up in the california gold country, the Iron Stone winery, in the town of murphys . It is a very picturesque little hamlet . The hotel even has a room where U..S Grant once slept !!! Boz Skaggs opened the show and it was great to see him and his knucklehead brothers whom I have known for a while . Plus Scotty played with Boz for like FOREVER....If you ever get a chance , go up there and have a look . Next I had a day off in Salt lake City . Now SLC gets a bad rap but I actually like it there . It has clean desert air and it isn't crowded. I usually go to a baseball game when I am there but the Stingers where on the road. I have been on a real slump this tour regarding baseball . Every time I have a day off the hometown team is away. Like when we were in Portland my neighbor in Marin, Max Venable who used to play for the San Francisco Giants,is the hitting coach for the Beavers. But he was out of town . oh well.
Anywho I strolled down to the Mormon Tabernacle and lo and behold there was an organ recital . Man o' Man was it awesome. They have a pipe organ in there that was built in the 1860's . I called Scotty our keyboard player to come down but he was not out of bed yet because it was only noon!!!!! The Salt lake crowd is always crazy which I love . Maybe why that is why we play there every year .
Next we landed in Albuquerque ( I am only going to spell that once ).I had a day off so I rented a car . Now we certainly have played in Alb before but not many times so I thought I would look around . Oh yeah, you know it is chicken or feathers with these casino shows but that Sandia Casino in Alb is really well done . it is first class everything . And it beautiful to watch the sun go down on the desert as I am up on stage playing . So before I took out on my rentacar experience I went to Yelp.com which is an amazing site for us traveling dudes. Check it out. It recommended Sadies mexican restaurant. Amazing. That is some of the best mexican food I have had . Check it out .
Now I knew that my friends Andy and Diane ,they were producers and writers on the Chris Isaak show, had a new TV show and were shooting it in Alb. So they invited me to the set and went over and who should be a guest star but Peter Bogdonovich!!!!
HOLY SHIT..... One of my all time favorite movies is THE LAST PICTURE SHOW which he directed . So I am asking him all of these questions about the movie and he is gracious enough to answer them . I was in hog heaven . I told Peter that me and my friends quote the movie all the time . And he said which quote . I said I did'nt know where to start ! ( If you are not aware this movie takes place in Texas in the 50s and was written by larry McMurtry. So I say that I grew up in a Texas town about 2 hours west of Archer City where the movie takes place . The lead part, Sam the Lion, played to oscar winning greatness by Ben Johnson says "I should know better than to bet on my on hometown" and a guy next to him says "maybe you need a new hometown!" I told Peter that I got that line totally . We went to dinner that evening and he kept the whole table in his grasp. Now I have know some good story tellers but he takes the cake he is the missing link to old hollywood. He was personal friends with Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford , Cary Grant. Sal Mineo, for christ sakes!!!! . What a night off . It is usually just me and chicken wings and the baseball game on nights off !!!
We had a great show in Denver last night at a new place for us the Botanical gardens . It isnt like that Botanical gardens in Memphis which has flys the size of sparrows !!! Also we had this british dude James Hunter opening up and he was fantastic . Try and catch him . We have had some great bills this tour between james hunter and my girl Nicole Atkins . Also yesterday I was coming back to my hotel but who should walk in front of me but james Taylor . He even held the elevator for me so I introduced myself and I said I had noticed he was following us around the country . And he said he had noticed it too. As we both got off on the 9th floor he jokingly said "oh we are on the same floor .....keep it down will you !!!"
I just went to the bookstore and bought 30 dollars worth of magazines for our 22 hour bus ride tonight to the great white north . I have the new Tony Horvitz book , definetly check him out he is hysterical , but I will probably knock that off by South Dakota......
