AN APOLOGY EXTENDED, HOT VEGAS ACTION, AND THE SWEATY GIG TRIFECTA !
I suppose that an apology is needed to the Colorado Rockies fans. I called their team "real crappy" and they were the night I saw them and I will be a son of a b#itch .........THEY ARE IN THE WORLD SERIES ! That just goes to show you what a great game baseball is . The Rockies get red hot and run the table and go from shiftless to champs . A tip of the Tam o' shantern to the Rockies.
it has been a long time since we have talked. And I have received numerous emails telling me to get off of my duff and do some blogs and they are right . It has been a combination of things . The weather is stunning this time of year in San Rafael ,it is like the mediterranean . No wonder my neighborhood is an old Italian place . They know where the good weather is . There is even a huge bocce ball court a few blocks over . And all the old people in my hood have great Italian last names . Plus there has been a lot going on life wise ......Anywho let me tell you about Las Vegas ! So I don't know if you saw it but we taped a TV show singing an Elvis tune with Brandi Carlile. It came out swell ! So after singing that song 30 times we made plans to go out to dinner with David Saltz the executive producer of the show . We have known David for years . He has done several TV shows with us . So our manager Sheryl says that we will meet in a couple of hours and it will be Isaak , me , sheryl David Saltz, Brandi and her pal, and unexplicably ... we are to meet up later with john Fogerty and his wife!
Now believe you me I don't have the big swinging nights out on the town usually . But I didn't realize that Saltz is mucho connected . Hell he knows everyone in town . We are on the way to the restaurant and Saltz goes hey how would everyone like to meet Floyd Mayweather .....And I am all , you mean the super lightweight champion of the world ? that guy ? And Saltz is all ...yeah that guy ...So we make a right turn into some Casino and we head to this club that has a humongous line and Saltz goes right to the front and in we go and it is PACKED!!!!!So we are wiggling thru the crowd and finally make it up to Floyd who has a huge entourage around him but we get thru and we have a little chat with him .....I cant tell you what happened next but ask me next time you see me ........then we head out to the restaurant and meet john fogerty there and we have not seen him in quite a while . John has a fine new CD out and we talked about that and I remembered the time that we were doin the "arf" animal benefit for St louis Cardinal's manager Tony La Russa and Fogerty was doing it as well . And he calls up Isaak and says do think Kenney Dale would play drums with me at the benefit ? And Isaak says "Yeah if you ask him nice " knowing full well that I am a creedence nut . So yeah that was quite a thrill I got to play "Midnight Special' and "Born on the Bayou ", for chritsakes, with John Fogerty ..Quite a thrill....Well it was quite late by the time we finished and as we got up Saltz goes we have to go for a night cap and so we did and I had a great time talking to Brandi Carlile and her friend who is a cop.Always interesting.
Speaking of cops ....My favorite TV show is the Wire ...I am totally hooked ...YOU FEELIN' ME .....CHECK IT OUT .IT IS ON ,ON DEMAND if you get the package....true dat...
Like I say for the most part I have been hanging out around the homestead. But we did a series of three shows last week and they were so much fun . First we flew to Miami Fla. And I mean to tell you we don't get there that much but it's like no other city in the states. I went swimming in South beach but it was humid as a mother f#%!er. It is funny ,Florida may repulse you at first and that is a normal response but look deeper and it is really cool . We stayed down on South Beach and the Art Deco buildings are so pretty and they are kind of rotting just like everything else because they are by that unrelenting ocean . And did I mention the cuban food . The miami airport feels more like you in Belize than Florida but Rafael, our percussionist ,who grew up in miami after stops in Cuba and Spain , drug me over to the cuban kiosk in the airport and told me to get a Medi noche sandwich and, as I always do what Rafael tells me to do ,I got one for the plane ride and it was KILLER...Next stop Dallas . Dallas is always bittersweet for me because I have so many memories of the place and not all of them are good but we were playing a private party on the field of the cotton bowl ......HOT DAMN.....For a Texan the Cotton bowl is a holy shrine . All of the many football games that have been played there .....We are using the same dressing rooms that the teams use and they have definitely seen better days, cracked ceilings, missing tiles, but that just adds to the charm . So I am in the toilet area and I let loose with a "Hey Hershel...just thing Dandy Don Meredith probably used this very toilet " " Who is that ? he opines....." Why you damned Palo Alto infidel!!!! He was the great Dallas cowboys quarterback and known party animal. That's who...
So we didn't have much time before the show and Sheryl and Rafael wanted to go see the Texas state fair that was going on next door and I said well if you only see one thing you should see Big Tex .Which is this 4 story tall man robot cowboy thing that welcomes the fairgoers and tells them to " mosey on over to the chow hall" They liked it and Sheryl got some deep fried cookie dough so everyone was happy ...next stop AUSTIN .....Unlike Dallas all of my memories of Austin are great . I really loved my time when I lived in Austin though it was when dinosaurs roamed the earth .......We had a night off and I spent it on sixth street with my old friend Jimmy Acevedo . He used to do monitors for us and hell I have known jimmy since we use to raise hell in North Beach ,in San Francisco. We had a time . Sixth street is much more touristy than when I lived in Austin but that is OK it is still fun . It was down right funky when I lived there but I have a ghost on every corner . I remember I used to hang out with Stevie Ray Vaughn and Alex Napier at the "One Knight" blues bar which I walked by on this trip . It had a sign , I remember , over the men's toilet that said "We aim to please , you aim too , please" Just a bit of the local color. We used to play blues in there all night and it was hot and sweaty ,no airconditioning, drink longneck beers and act the fool .Good times.I also walked by the old Ritz theater. It looks like they are fixing it up . I played at the Ritz with my then band and we opened up for The Meters a couple of times ,there. Man that was in their prime . And they used to scare the sh@t out of me because they were so good !
We had a great show at the Backyard venue which is a great place to play and we saw many of our old friends . And who should show up but our pal Michele Branch . She had played earlier in the day and came and sat in with us and Did "Walking after midnight" by Patsy Cline . She then hung out after the show and we had a great time . We all just sat around and told lies into the night. It always makes me nostalgic to visit Austin and I had such a great time when I was there . Thanks for indulging me .But California is home now .
And we start to rehearse tomorrow.
