THE GREAT SALT LAKE, MICHAEL BUBLE, AND THE MIGHTY SALT LAKE CITY BEES !
So we had a big bus ride after the Rodney Strong show in California . We were headed off to Salt Lake City for a couple of days off . I wake up in the bus about an hour and a half outside of Salt Lake City ,from here on to be known as SLC .Yes I am lazy .
Anywho , I am the only one awake and I go to the back lounge and WHOA .....there isnt a tree within a hundred miles . I recognize the Great Salt Lake . It is pretty impressive but it makes me thirsty so I make my self an ice cold Perrier (there are 3 things you can get anywhere in the world... Perrier water, Tabasco sauce , and Jack Daniels) and settle in to the back lounge . I crack my computer , the bus wireless dosen't work and neither does the cell phone service so we are in the sticks . I guess I am forced to READ A BOOK ! So we finally pull into the hotel in SLC and we have stayed at this place a dozen times .You know , I like SLC . I know people make fun of it but it is really a nice place . They have a nice dry summer and it is really a big small town. We were staying downtown and there were never very many people around , refreshing.
Before I forget it I want to thank everyone for their suggestions on a cell service . I broke down in SLC and bought myself a chocolate phone . HOLY SH#T.....what an amazing piece of gear . I threw my trio away . The chocolate is a third as heavy and way cooler. I just love the GPS feature. I went out and got it at the Gateway mall . Which is an outdoor mall they built for the Olympics .They kind of just tacked on to the edge of town so people would have something to do !
I remember we played outside at the Gateway on Scott's first tour and it was funny because we know so many songs Chris would just call out songs and Scotty would yell at me 'WHAT SONG IS THIS !!!" And I would say "relax there are only three chords you will get it " and he did. Scott's previous bands didnt just "throw stuff in " I guess....Oh yeah and did I mention that it was hotter than sh#t!!!!!
The next day I go outside the hotel and there are like 10 busses parked all around the hotel . It is rock and roll heaven . I ask the bell dude, who came in over night and he said Michael Buble. Well as you may or may not know , he is a friend of the Isaak outfit . He did our christmas special ,our TV show and we did some shows with him a few years ago before he exploded!!!!!
We go over to Europe and he is HUGE there and he is even bigger in Australia . Anywho I didnt know if I would see him or not.
A couple of years ago ,when we were in SLC , I went to the baseball game to see the SLC BEES. And so I did again this trip ..They have a magnificent park with a view of the mountains in the background .Usually when you go to the game by yourself you can get a pretty good ticket . But when I stepped out of the cab it was PACKED. Turns out it was family night .I thought about turning back but thought.... what the hey . I go and buy a ticket , go in and start looking for my seat and HOLY SH#T I am the seat right behind the ump and I put my feet up on the backstop .FRONT ROW..... I can hear the pitches for christsakes!!!! SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSMACK. That is living!
So I am at the game and my phone rings and it is Rafael ,our percussion player. And he says "Hey Kenney we are meeting Michael Buble for dinner at 7:30 you want to come ?" I tell Rafael , I am at the ball game and it has just started . So I wasnt sure just how that was going to play out . I stayed and watched the game which ,as usual for triple A ,was a slug fest . Three home runs and the Bees were crushing the Tacoma team 10 to 4 .So around the 8th inning I booked and caught a cab back to the hotel . Now I figured those blabbermouths would still be cooking when I got back 2 hours later and sure enough there they were . So I go in and Buble gives me a hug . We call him Burnaby Mike . He introduces me to his girlfriend Emily Blunt . You know the actress that was in The Devil wears Prada......Ironically it was on the TV the night before. I had seen it a few times because l,ast year, you could not take an overseas plane trip without seeing that movie. Now I thought it would be a "CICKFLICK", but it had some damn funny lines in it . So back to the dinner ....they were finshing up and Isaak and Rafael and some of the others were swapping lies with Buble . Rafael has known Buble for a long time . He plays on all of his CDs .I stayed for a little while then called it a night ......
You know a guy can have some fun in old Salt Lake City ....
