WOLFTRAP, THE DREADED DOCTOR VISIT ON THE ROAD, AND CONAN
Hey gang sorry it has been so long since my last blog .We have been mighty busy and plus I got sick. A bronchial infection. More about that later. We limped out of Chicago , literally,Scott twisted an ankle ,badly. Roly dropped a drawer on his foot and I am hacking up half of a lung . Perfect . Midwest here we come !!!!!
We finally plow our way thru the Midwest and plop down in Virginia to do the Wolftrap show . Wolftrap is hallowed ground to me . Now in case you dont know the backstage area to all of these different venues vary wildly . It is either chicken or feathers..Some places have like an old outdoor trailer and one port 'O san , or honey bucket as it is affectionately called. That venue shall go nameless....Or on the other hand be like Wolftrap . Since big orchestras and theatical productions play there .There are toilets and showers as far as the eye can see......Plus I played there one time on my birthday .The turnout at Wolftrap didnt disapoint. It was huge and the crowd was just great . I hope we always get to play there .
So the day before we pull into our hotel in Virginia and I had made the dreaded doctor's appointment on the road for when we got to Virginia . You know, I find the doctors on line then call around till I can find one who will take me right away .This is all totally blind . Now I take a cab over to this address and it is a tract house all by itself stuck back off of a two lane road . Not the medical center I had invisioned !!!! The cab drops me off in the back and I go in the back door . Now it is a house mind you and an old lady is behind the desk and everywhere is clutter. Books stacked everywhere ,xeroxed cat jokes pinned up everywhere and no cat in sight. And yet another old lady in the corner reading a newspaper with no apparent agenda. A piano with sh#t stacked all over it and throw pillows everywhere. Now I am not easily spooked , but if David lynch had walked out I would not have been surprised !!!! And plus I had gone to a lot of trouble to get to this exact spot . The doctor was cool and he gave me some pills and i was as good as new . It was creepy and I am glad to have someone to share that with .You.
Later that day I bumped into our manager Sherly and she asked where I was coming from . And I told her I was coming back from that mall over there . She asked had I had lunch . And I said I had and that she was going to be mad. Why? she asked . And I said because ,against all odds, that souless mall over there has a 5 GUYS hamburger in it . She just about flipped. For the uninitiated ,Marty Hom , Stevie Nicks' road manager turned Sheryl on to 5 guys and she in turn took us to 5 guys one time when we were in Washington D. C. Needless to say they are great !!!!!
On to Danbury Connecticut. Now I sh#t you not the stage at this venue was over a big pond complete with pond scum and mosquitos.it is kind of on the campus of Western Connecticut University. So I am asking everyone what the mascot for this college is called .And absolutely no one knows what the football team is called. And I cant believe it . How do you go to a school and not know what the mascot is ???????
Then Omar, my drum tech ,says you know that really shows how Texan you are . Football is THAT important. They are the mighty fighting Colonials by the way !!!!!!
On to New Hampshire........man ,my buddy Jimmy Pugh who plays with Robert Cray told me they have played the Hampton ballroom a million times but somehow we missed it ......let me tell you it is this very old ballroom that looks like 1910 and it sounds great and the crowd is really great . We had an absolute ball that night in New Hampshire. It is right on the beach and the people watching was fierce !!!!!!! I hope we get to play there for years to come.
On to new York City .....So Isaak and I go and do a sort of cameo on the Conan O;Brian show .....We are buddies with those guys since we did their show back in the spring from San Francisco . you do remember that dont you ? Seems like a million years ago right now . There is a lot of water under the bridge since then !!!!
Anywho they are so nice over on Conan...We visited with Conan for a while and then I love talking to the guys in the band ...Jimmy ,La Bamba and especially Max Weinberg...He is such a student of rock and roll history I really enjoy talking with him aboutt it . He wrote a great book on famous drummers. That is such a great band to watch ,they are smoking.....I also love Mark Pender the trumpet player on the show .....He told me this hilarious story about someone O.D. ing on Bar-B-Que at Gates' in Kansas City ....he is from kansas City and well you know .....plus he is monster talented trumpet player.....onetime years ago ....I was playing in a bar in San Francisco with ,you guessed it , Ron Thompson and Mark Pender was in town playing with Bruce Springsteen and he came over and sat in with us . Man he blew the roof off of the sucker ......This jaded road dog is pretty excited .....We are playing the Beacon Theater in New York city tonight and it does'nt get any better than that !!! It is one of my very favorite place to play on earth ....Now if they would only give the dressing rooms a coat of paint ....
Hell, give me a brush I will do it myself!!!!
